Continente, MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels), Montréal, Québec (Canada) 2009

In this exhibition, I suggest an immersive exploration of the impact of uprooting, displacement, and the resonance of memory through a monumental installation of earth-filled wooden casts strewn across the space. By combining the textures and scents of earth and wood with a warm, contrasting play of light, I seek to evoke a physical and sensory feeling of nostalgia within the viewer. Inspired by my own experience of immigration, this project centers on the complex tensions surrounding identity and cultural hybridization. These structural forms serve as a metaphor: I employ traditional Latin American construction techniques, yet I use a universal material—the earth—to represent myself. It is the very act of making a cast that symbolizes the dislocation of travel, where past and present collide. Seamlessly melded with the open architecture of the gallery, the artwork thrives on a continuous dialogue between the venue's multicultural objective cartography and my own vibrant plastic subjectivity. Conceived as the evolutionary consequence of my previous projects En tránsito and Nomade, this physical occupation of space stands as an act of resistance and identity assertion, erecting ephemeral, habitable architectures within a transnational territory.
