The observatory ll, Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) 2017
With this project, I present a temporary in situ structure, an elementary and intentionally half-finished construction. Minimal in appearance, these wooden lookouts invite wandering, offering passersby a physical journey akin to a path or an ambulatory trail. From the top of these "observatories," visitors can scan the surrounding environment while noting the trace—both physical and aesthetic—of their own movement through nature. This project functions as an experimentation: the observer witnesses the transformation of the landscape through the lens of their own subjectivity, visiting the remnants of the passing gaze to actively participate in the building of a visual memory. Within this open-air, human-scale laboratory, my intervention process thrives on a continuous dialogue between the objective cartography of the wilderness and my own vibrant plastic subjectivity. These icons of settlement prompt us to reflect on how human beings occupy their habitat, find shelter, and mark their territory. Shifting along the boundaries of nomadism and sedentarism, nature and culture, the temporary and the permanent, my physical occupation of space stands as an act of resistance and identity assertion, transforming this testing ground into a shared territory for poetic grounding.
